Jungle Cruise memories... (part 3 of 3)

A very common question is "Are the jokes scripted?", my answer is "sort of". Jungle has a script. However the script is designed with a lot of "grey areas" in mind. Disney doesn't want a Skipper to sound like they are reading a book. They want a natural spiel. So Skippers are encouraged to modify the words, to make the joke their own. My trainer always referred to it as "blending".
Years ago my trainer issued me a challenge. Each day pick a joke from the spiel, blend it, and make it funny. On occasion I found that blending several jokes together worked better then just telling the scripted joke as it was written. Pretty soon my entire spiel was blended. It was a lot of fun for my crew, but as I'll explain it proved to be far more fun for a certain manager.
Bob had been at Disneyland for years. He was a highly respected manager who was strictly by the book and a lot of Skips were afraid of him. He had a habit of riding in the back of a boat and listening to every joke a Skip told. Once the tour was over he would open up the spiel and check each joke. You can see why some Skips were afraid of him. Like I said. by the book.
Call it fate, call it luck, call it the fickle finger of fate. Bob chose to ride my boat. So in he comes, and off we go. 8 minutes of fun and excitement. I tell all my jokes, people laugh, Bob furiously tries to write it all down and remember it. In a flash we are back at the dock.
Bob steps out, I step out shortly after (my boat partner was back) and Bob makes a bee-line for the spiel book. As I unload boats I watch him furiously flipping pages, back and forth, comparing this and that to his notes from my tour. Our Lead is hovering over him, trying to figure out what happened.
"Well what did he start with Bob?" "He started with this" as Bob points to a joke. Then he starts flipping pages "and then it was this" as he points to another joke. He flips a few more pages "and I think he closed with this one here". "Great, three jokes, all in the book" "That was his opening joke"
It took Bob a full 15 minutes to compare the spiel to his notes. He had to have flipped through the whole spiel at least 4 times. I know because I was bumped out of rotation by the time he was done. Finally he closed the book and quietly walked over to me. "I don't know what the hell you just said, but that was entertaining, good job!" I was told later that I was one of the only ones to ever pass Bob's test.
