Disneyland: The Show Must Go On!
By David W. Smith

Hey Hidden Mickey Fans!

When ever you get 30 to 50 thousand people together in one general area, (or, in this case, one 90 acre theme park!), you get to see the gamut of how people react in different situations. I greatly attribute my ability to lecture to hundreds of people in conferences or teach dozens of tennis players in clinics and workshops to my experience working at Disneyland.

In general, it is amazing that a place like Disneyland can exist with tens of thousands of people moving about for a dozen or more hours without problems or mishaps. Of course, most of that success is attributed to the training and overall production and management of the park by those who interact with those guests.

Nancy in the Hidden Mickey Gullywumper! LOLMy six years working in Disneyland gave me a first hand'and backstage'look at the how the show would go on each and every day. From the training we received in each area of the park we worked, we were shown how to handle many of the expected'and unexpected'events that may occur during the course of any working shift. (I was initially in operations in New Orleans Square on the Canoes, followed by training on Pirates of the Caribbean and then the Mike Fink Keel Boats'may the Bertha Mae and the Gullywumper rest in peace'and finally, I transferred to RETLAW and was trained on the Monorail.)

However, there is no amount of training that could prepare me or my fellow cast members for events that no one could even guess could happen, let alone believe could happen!

Everyday was different working at Disneyland. I think that for most of the cast members, heading to work at the Magic Kingdom was a little like Forest Gump's proverbial box of chocolates: You never know what you're going to get'at least until you clocked in! I don't know if it was just me or if all of the cast members experienced this, but some days we would just feel like something weird was going to happen. And, in more cases than not, something weird would indeed occur during that particular shift.

Without going into all the details, some of the more memorable events during my six years in the park would have to be:

Finding the dead 18 year old Grad Night kid who drowned in the Rivers of America

Breaking up a fight between two men (whose total IQ had to be less than that of my senile Cocker Spaniel!), who were fighting in front of Pirates because one of them gave a ride to the other guy in exchange for some 'special favors' promised to the driver by the other guy's girlfriend. (Who, incidentally, had an IQ probably even less than either of the two men!)

Catching a kid urinating in the Rivers of America'IN FRONT OF GUESTS. (The kid was about 7 years old.)

Watching a canoe filled with guest tip completely over'something we were told could never happen.

Cast members pretending to be audio-animatronics in Pirates of the Caribbean. (Some days, we just couldn't find enough things to keep us occupied on our breaks!)

I could write a book, (Hey I've written three!), about all the x-rated stuff that I've seen happen in the park. It seems that to many people, Disneyland is the ultimate challenge! Forget about the 'mile high club'!

Hidden Mickey novels are available in Hardback paperback and eBook

In all seriousness, you get 50,000 people together and you get 50,000 personalities, 50,000 moods, and, unfortunately, 50,000 of the aforementioned IQ's! While most days would be filled with simply doing our jobs and making 49,995 people happier for being there, there were those few individuals who were there for no other reason than to be a grouch. It was rare, but occasionally, we all would encounter an 'Archie Bunker' who, no matter what, could not be made to have fun.

But, then we would get the people who were just so excited to be at the Happiest Place on Earth, that no matter what kind of mood WE were in, seeing these people taking in the magic of the Magic Kingdom literally would catapult us into a smile that would often last the whole day through!
